The Trucial States of the Persian Gulf coast granted the UK control of their defense and foreign affairs in 19th century treaties.
n 1971, six of these states – Abu Zaby ( Abu Dhabi), ‘Ajman, Al Fujayrah (Fujairah) , Ash Shariqah (Sharjah) , Dubayy (Dubai), and Umm al Qaywayn (Umm al Qaiwain) – merged to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They were joined in 1972 by Ra’s al Khaymah.
The UAE’s per capita GDP is on par with those of leading West European nations. Its generosity with oil revenues and its moderate foreign policy stance have allowed the UAE to play a vital role in the affairs of the region.
UAE Old vs. New
Globalization plays a significant role in the development of many states and affects people all around the world. Nonetheless, it is responsible for the expansion of economies in the G.C.C especially in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Thirty five years ago, the UAE was very depended on fishing and pearl diving, which were the main trades during that time, now the UAE has become known as one of the most cosmopolitan countries in the world, due to its famous landmarks and tourism, such as Burj Dubai, Burj Al Arab, sky scrappers on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai Shopping Festivals and ski Dubai.
In our present day, globalization has had and still has positive and negative impact on the UAE society and cultures. As a result of globalization, cultures and life styles of a certain families have changed, some are liberal and are more open to different cultures, lifestyles but still stand strong to their culture and others are more conservative. Furthermore, fast foods have replaced the UAE traditional food. The consumption of these fast foods has had a positive and negative impact on the society. Globalization has helped the UAE transform itself from a small city to a great developed and modern country, nonetheless, not only did the expatriates contribute and affect the UAE but also media has played a vital role. However, not everyone is acceptant of globalization in the UAE. Due to globalization, women in the UAE are being aware the importance of education, it has led to the growth and economic boom of the UAE.
